Volunteering at the LibraryThe McKinney Public Library System welcomes volunteers 15 years of age or older in the Volunteer program. New opportunities will be posted on this page when open. Volunteers may apply for open volunteer opportunities listed below by completing an online application linked at the end of the job opening. The Volunteer Handbook is available in the right column of this page.
Selected applicants will be interviewed for the position for which they have applied. Due to limited availability, please note that we cannot guarantee volunteer hours. McKinney Volunteer Policy requires criminal background checks on volunteers aged 18 or older. If you have questions, contact Elfi Roberts at 972-547-7336.

Volunteer Position Descriptions
Shelf Maintenance Program
Help to maintain in correct alphabetical or Dewey Decimal order. Shelves need to be checked and straightened each week during a scheduled shift.
Teen Volunteer Program
Assist our Youth Services Staff with special projects, shelving books and other duties as needed.
Tables and Chairs Set-Up
Help set up and take down tables and chairs for events, such as ESL programs.
ESL (English as a Second Language) TutorsTeach small groups of limited-English-speaking adults how to read, speak and write English.
Assist with indexing newspapers from microfilm. Must be able to read from microfilm and write clearly. This position is only at the Roy and Helen Hall Library.
Children’s programs consist of Storytime and Music and Movement. Volunteers assist staff by checking in attendees using an online system.
Occasional volunteers are needed for one-time events or projects.

The McKinney Public Library regrets that it cannot accept court-ordered community service volunteers. See the list of local agencies that accept this requirement. Each agency has its own criteria on who it will accept as court-ordered volunteers.
