The McKinney Public Library system is planning a Grand Opening event for the John and Judy Gay Library, 6861 W. Eldorado Parkway on December 10, 2009 at 10:30 am. The new 20,000 square foot facility will serve as a much-needed library to the McKinney population and includes green elements such as a geothermal heating and cooling system, recycled products and an emphasis on natural lighting. The City of McKinney is thrilled to be opening a new facility during difficult economic times, however, McKinney’s second library will initially open with storefront service. Patrons will have the opportunity to check out books, DVDs, CDs and all of the materials they are used to in a library. Additionally, there will be a self-service automated computer lab. However, regular programs, book clubs, meeting room rentals, and more cannot be offered at this time because of the limited number of staff funded at the storefront level. Plans are in place to incorporate these elements into the library as soon as funds are available.
